I was in Honolulu on business staying at one of those unfortunate tourist enclaves built on Waikiki. I had arrived on Saturday to enjoy a couple of days on the beach before my meetings on Monday. I had sunned and swam enough on Saturday and was ready to explore the beach past the front of my hotel. After breakfast, I threw on my board shorts, slid into my flip-flops and started walking down the beach. As gorgeous as the ocean is in Hawaii, I was looking back at the beach. Mixed in with the overweight Midwesterners and German tourists were beautiful women on their honeymoon, dark-skinned local girls and smaller groups of Asian girls all wearing sexy bikinis or short shorts. I caught a look here or there, but having a girlfriend back home I didn’t want to pursue anything.

The Boss brings a friend.

Tony tossed the package on his desk in front of me. Simple brown paper wrap with a strip of packing tape to hold it together. It had been a month since my boss Tony and I had had our first night of man to man sex in an out of the way hotel on a business trip. As always, a trip to the hot spa and springs at Val d’Orcia had made me feel vigorous and virile. Rosella would be getting quite a workout tonight. I thanked my lucky stars that Rosella had been so accommodating after my wife and mistress had both died unexpectedly within months of each other two years ago. I couldn’t be more lucky to now have Rosella to turn to. But, no that wasn’t fully true. For that brief period, several decades ago, before I had to take over the family responsibilities, I had been happier. In recent weeks, I’d been coming more and more back to the memories of those too-few happy months of my youth—and to my American lover. I wondered now if this was a harbinger of the end of my days. I was only in my mid sixties and in as good a condition as considerable money and leisure could buy, but my family hadn’t been known for its longevity.

A hidden past is revealed.

The narrow, white frame-house was nice enough, Dillon supposed, but there was something about this whole thing that just didn”t feel right. Ben had a sister? If that was true, then why hadn”t Ben ever mentioned her to Jamie before? And where did Mitchell Harding fit into all this?

Jamie seemed to be having his own reservations, if his hesitancy to open the gate of the chain-link fence surrounding the property was any indication.

Dillon put his hand on Jamie”s shoulder. “We don”t have to do this, you know. We can always get back in the car and just go.”

Dillon is granted a measure of peace.

Despite the fact that he”d only seen Alicia Wilton a few times around town, Jamie found himself trusting the woman. Her manner reminded him of Megan”s, warm and open, not the kind of woman who”d keep secrets or lie to him. Jamie relaxed just a fraction, more than he would have thought possible under the circumstances.

Alicia plopped her briefcase down on the table. “When Brandon called me, he told me that the two of you were in trouble and that Dillon”s father was pressing charges for an alleged assault. Bran was on his way out to look for you, last I heard, and he wanted me to come here and wait until he found you. I”m guessing he did.”
